HMS – The Four Horsemen
A Group of Long-Term Friends
The four of us - Allen Heimer, Bob Apgar, Vince Brown, and myself - became close friends in 1960 while in high school. We lived in or near Bossier City, as all our fathers were in the US Air Force at nearby Barksdale AFB. We jokingly called ourselves "The Four Horsemen" and adopted "HMS" as our group name - it stood for absolutely nothing.
Bob & Drin were married in 1967 and I was Best Man - we stayed close all during the 60's into the late 1970's, then saw each other again in the 90's. Bob and Drin visited here in Reno in 2008 and my wife Liz & I visited them in Tallahassee, where Bob practises law, in 2009. Allen & I saw each other in 1963, then not again until 2007; Allen is a bank executive near Detroit. Vince and I visited in 1966 and again in 2004 in Hawaii, where he practicises medicine. We have all exchanged emails pretty much weekly since 2004. Bob, Drin, Allen, Liz and myself attended our high school's 45th reunion in 2007.
This year, we all decided to have a reunion for just HMS. Drin and Liz came along and had a great time as did Vince's 21 year old son, Matt (Vince's wife Pat suffered an injury right before the reunion and couldn't travel; Allen's wife died from cancer several years ago).
The nearly week-long reunion was held in San Diego. We spent many great hours talking on the rooftop of our Gaslamp District hotel, walking & eating in the Gaslamp area, seeing museums and eating in Balboa park, walking and eating on Coronado Island, and shopping and eating in Old Town. We enjoyed each other so much we're already talking about another reunion.
