My Personal Life

Thanks for visiting this website.  This one page tells about what led to my early retirement, my personal life, & my other interests.

Retiring in 1991 at age 47 from a hectic business career, my life has changed dramatically since.  After taking a good while to adjust from a severe illness and the "Too Much Time Syndrome," I gradually re-filled my life with meaningful activities and achieved some harmony and balance.

Life Overview

Work was hard, stressful, demanding, yet exciting - I feel like I made a difference... and trust that I will continue to do so.  I have always lived "outside the box."  This made life tough, but fun.  Unfortunately, my fast-paced lifestyle and long hours resulted in a severe illness that forced an early retirement.

Retirement, though initially painful from the combination of a challenging and threatening health condition coupled with the "Too Much Time Syndrome", is now rewarding.  I love my wife, kids, and grandkids.  I enjoy people.  I have lots of interests and avocations - being somewhat of a Renaissance Man - which keep me occupied.  I enjoy smelling the roses and wouldn't change Life a bit..

Personal

Wife:  Liz and I married in 1983 - she is and has been the light of my life.  Our years have been fun, adventurous, and full of good companionship.  We like each other and enjoy going out on dates, sampling ethnic food (Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese, Greek, Indian, Mediterranean, Turkish, Carribean, African, Chinese, Korean, Mexican, and more), riding in our Classic Cars (1970 and 1978 MGB's and, formerly, three 1950 Fords and a 1968 Mustang), traveling the nation and the world (most the US States and 18 other countries), and a wide variety of other activities.

Liz has degrees in English and Computer Sciences.  Early in her career, she worked as the Executive Assistant for the CEO of BDS, Inc. (a Silicon Valley printer manufacturer) and then, from 1983 until 1991, for all three of my consulting firms (Barry Barnes & Company, The Barnes & Senne Group, and Leadership Growth, Inc.) in successively more responsible logistics and financial management roles, culminating as Vice President of Finance.  Liz re-joined the "traditional" work force in 1991, rising quickly from a “temp” worker of Grass Valley's only sizeable high-tech firm to a member of the company’s Executive Team, managing five call centers (two in Oregon, one in Grass Valley, one in Hollywood, and another in Wisconsin and coordinating activities for ones in Japan and London) as Director of Customer Service for Grass Valley Group, Inc., a subsidiary of Tektronix, Inc.  From 1999 to 2002, she then owned and ran GBS Financial Services and, from 2002 until late 2004, owned and ran GM&B Snacks, a two-county vending business.

In late 2004, she became Customer Relationships Manager with PC-Doctor, Inc., a computer diagnostics software firm in Reno, Nevada where she is now Senior OEM Sales Manager.

Adult Kids:  With Liz Haggard Barnes:  Lianne, born 1985 (full-time college student, part-time nanny, and and an accomplished singer) who lives in Reno, NV; Kelly Len Flecksteiner, born 1979 (food services supervisor, mother of David, Ben, Ethan, & Baylie, and wife of Rob Flecksteiner), living in Penn Valley, CA.  By Charlene Campisi Barnes Stephens:  Jenn Fili, born 1972 (former production manager and sales director of Tri-Steel Structures, Inc., mother of AJ & Lucas, and wife to Christopher Fili) living in Denton, TX; Kelly Michelle Bullock, born 1969 (interior designer, wife of Brad Bullock, mother of Bailey), Irving TX; and Stace Barnes, born 1966 (international attorney, father to Alex & Gregory, husband to Tanya) living in Houston, TX.

Homes:  Liz and I lived Sunnyvale in the Silicon Valley area, and then moved to the country in the California “Gold Country” foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in 1989 where we lived on two small farms for five years each, then a development in the country near Grass Valley, CA for another five years. In late 2004, we moved to Reno, Nevada.  Our move to Reno has been a surprisingly good one and we enjoy being in a small city... and particularly all the good ethnic and quality food available at the many Reno restaurants.

Prior Homes:  Prior to marrying Liz, I lived in the following locations:  Santa Clara, CA; Los Gatos, CA; Sunnyvale, CA; Cupertino, CA; Garland, TX, Irving, TX, Richardson, TX; Hendersonville, NC; Alamogordo, NM: Albuquerque, NM; Rockville, MD; Gaithersburg, MD; Shreveport, LA; and Bossier City, LA.  As a child and teenager, I lived in:  Bossier City, LA; Topeka, KS; Clark AFB, Pampanga Province, Philippine Islands; Sequin, TX; Denison, TX; Southmayd, TX; Randolph AFB, TX; San Marcos, TX; Zeahle, TX; Arlington, TX; Ada, OK; Stonewall, OK; Boca Raton, FL; and Randolph Field, TX.

Volunteer Activities

Church & Volunteer Work:  At our former church until late 2004, Sierra Pines United Methodist (between Grass Valley and Auburn, CA), I served as:  Member of Family Life Committee; Chair of Administrative Council; Chair of the Vision & Strategy Committee; Co-Chair of 4-day Family Camp; “Dinner Dean” for mid-week multi-generational youth program; Bible Teacher.  At our former church, Sunnyvale Presbyterian (in Sunnyvale, CA - part of Silicon Valley) I was:  Co-Leader of Logos program; member of the Community Outreach Committee; Program Co-Leader at 4-day Family Camp one year; and Co-Director of the 4-day Family Camp another year.  Formerly, I was a Board Member of  Minds in Recovery, an organization for the severely mentally ill.  I also served as a Board Member and, later, Chair of the Architectural Committee of the Triana North Home Owners Association.
