78 MGB Engine Rebuild Performance Goals

Before beginning this project, I had a series of goals for it:  Key elements were for both major & incremental performance increases with an emphasis on achieving a torquey hill & mountain climber with decent in-town economy...

Torquey Hill Climber with Good Street Characteristics:  My goal before I started was to have:

  1. A high-torque, high-pep hill climber (for the mountain roads that surround Reno, Nevada – with mountain passes all the way up to 8,950’)
  2. Good street characteristics, and
  3. Decent economy for around-town driving

Consultation from Experts:  I wrote up the specs (in considerably more detail) and sent them around to a number of people who specialize in high-performance engines – then implemented their recommendations… and then some.

Key Engine Elements:  I ended up focusing on several key elements:

  1. Hot-tanked and over-bored
  2. Everything balanced that could be
  3. New, high-volume Weber DCOE 45 carburetors
  4. Dual cold air intake system with under-car air rams
  5. Tri-alloy MSX cross-flow head for heat isolation & dissipation
  6. Oversize double valve springs and special valves
  7. Roller rockers with rocker oiling system
  8. MSX "street-racing" cam optimized to the MSX cross-flow head
  9. High compession pistons
  10. High-performance / racing spec engine internals (190,000 psi)
  11. High-volume oil and water pumps
  12. Electronic ignition and high capacity coil
  13. Oil thermostat to warm up the oil quickly
  14. 19-row oversize oil cooler to keep the oil cool once the engine is running
  15. Relocated oil filter (from under carb to near coolant overflow container
  16. Exhaust maniifold cooling system with under-car air ram
  17. Extra engine compartment thermostatically-activated cooling fans
  18. All braided hoses in the engine compartment
  19. Monza header and flow-through exhaust system
  20. Overdrive transmission to lessen engine load and increase fuel efficiency
  21. Any other means of incrementally increasing power and efficiency
